don't be fooled, what you see in the pictures is not what you get
I ordered this ladder rack because I was looking for a ladder rack that I could attach with mounting bracks since I only need to carry my ladder occassionally and want to be able to easily install and remove it without drilling permanent holes in my truck. If you look at the pictures for this product they show a ladder rack with mounting clamps. However, what I received was a ladder rack without mounting clamps that has to be bolted onto my truck. When I called Damlow customer service, the guy tried to convince me that all ladder racks must be bolted into the truck. After this he said he would sent me a couple clamps that I could use to clamp the ladder rack onto my truck. This of course is a ridicules idea. Now I have to lug it to the UPS office and pay to ship it back. I wrote this review because I hope to prevent anyone else from being fooled.
quite adequate
(This review is by my husband, Don, the user of the truck rack.)
Quite nice for the price. By this I mean that I did not get a robustly engineered rack (the load carrying would be inadequate were it not that the truck has a double-walled bed), but neither did I pay for one; I did not get an aluminum rack, but neither did I pay for one. I am confident that I put two loads of about 600 lbs on the rack, drove a relatively rugged mountain road, and saw no signs of strain. I am happy with my purchase, but I will be surprised if my truck rack outlasts my (Toyota) truck.
(P.S. Don says that by "robustly engineered" he means that it wasn't sufficiently engineered so that it could be as securely fastened to the truck as a rack that was custom made for the particular truck.)
Shop around
THis is a very heavy sturdy ladder, i use it on my tailgate when my truck camper in on. Shop around i got it for 3 +free shipping elsewhere.
Excellent!
My truck is a Dodge Ram 2500 4WD with a very high bed. I usually got into the bed by climbing on one of the tires but when I added a cover, that was impossible. I used a step stool at the tailgate for a while but that was a hassle. The Truck-Pal solved the problem. It is sturdy and easy to mount with only a driver drill. I mounted it to the side so I could hold on to the cover while climbing the steps. Works great!
Westin Ladder, High Quality
What a great high quality ladder for your truck. Just added it to my 2005 Tundra Double Cab. Highest end quality, I've seen. It a Westin brand, that's why. Was easy to mount took about 5 minutes. I have a bedliner with tailgate liner and had to use longer self drilling metal screws then what came with the ladder. Not a big deal since I already had the self drilling screws in my garage. If you do not have a plastic tailgate liner the screws that came with it are fine. Even though the screws are self drilling it is easier to drill a small pilot hole first. If you need a longer screw and do not have them , just take the factory screw to Menards, Lowes, Etc. and find a metal self screwing screw a 1/2 inch longer then the screws it comes with. Paid 3 total with free shipping from the best price on the internet in Nov. 09- AMAZON. I had another Tundra with a tailgate ladder that mounted on the side of the Tailgate and it was around and was really nice but this was well worth the extra cost and it folds and has a latch to keep the ladder in the closed position when not in use. Again it's a Westin and quality is bare none............Also when mounting take in account were you place it if you have a Tonneau cover and the full action of the ladder in the opened position. I have a Trexedo Soft Roll up Tonneau Cpover and had to raise the Tonneau velcro track just a little bit to get everything just right. Easy to do but check during your install if it applies..............
Westin tailgate ladder
I really like my Westin tailgate ladder. I'm a dis-abled veteran with a lot of steel in my legs an getting up in the bed of the truck was always a problem and quite a show. Now I just pop right up
excellent truck folding ladder
I saw this product reviewed on one of those HorsepowerTV programs and it is exactly what was advertised. It works, it is strong and stores neatly. I can recommend this. I'm not using it on a pickup but instead on a very large transporter truck. I works well.
